Questions, answered
Frequently asked questions.
Practical answers about wait times, report turnaround, referrals, funding and what an assessment involves. If your question is not here, call us - we are happy to talk it through.
How long is the wait for an appointment?
We typically offer an appointment within four weeks of your enquiry. Wait times can vary with demand, so call us for the current availability when you are ready to book.
How long does it take to receive the report?
Written reports are usually completed within ten working days of the assessment. If you have a specific deadline - for example, a school enrolment or a specialist appointment - let us know and we will tell you what is achievable.
Do I need a referral?
No referral is required to book an assessment with us. However, a referral from a GP or specialist may support your eligibility for a Medicare rebate, so it is worth asking your GP if a referral is appropriate for your situation.
Who will conduct the assessment?
Every assessment is conducted by a fully registered psychologist. PECS is led by Dr Shane Langsford, an Endorsed Educational & Developmental Psychologist, alongside a team of registered psychologists.
What does an assessment involve?
An assessment generally involves an initial discussion of your concerns and history, the administration of standardised tests, and a written report with interpretation and recommendations. The specific measures used depend on the type of assessment - each assessment page sets out what is involved.
Will I get a diagnosis?
An assessment provides a careful evaluation against recognised diagnostic criteria. Where the evidence supports it, the report will set out diagnostic considerations. An assessment does not guarantee any particular outcome - the findings reflect the information gathered for that individual.
Can I claim a Medicare or private health rebate?
Rebates may be available through Medicare with an appropriate referral, or through your private health fund depending on your level of cover. We can explain the pathways that may apply when you enquire. See our Fees & Rebates page for more detail.
Are you a registered NDIS provider?
Yes. PECS is a registered NDIS provider. Our assessments are claimable under NDIS plans for plan-managed and self-managed participants whose plans include relevant funding. See our NDIS page for details.
Do you assess both children and adults?
Yes. We assess children, adolescents and adults. The assessment is tailored to the age and presentation of the person being assessed.
Can I see an example of a report before I book?
Yes. We publish anonymised example reports so you know exactly what to expect. You can browse them on our Example Reports page.
Do you see clients from regional WA?
Yes. We accept referrals from across the Perth metropolitan area and from regional and remote Western Australia. Call us to discuss arrangements for travel or scheduling.
What does it cost?
Every assessment is charged at a pre-determined fee, so you know the total cost before you commit. Confirmed fees depend on the scope of the assessment and are provided when you enquire.
